FT Global Outsourcing and Offshoring Conference
Grange City Hotel 8-14 Cooper's Row, London, EC3N 2BD, UK
Today's competitive global marketplace requires companies to operate better, faster and more cost effectively than their competitors. While outsourcing is now recognised as a key weapon in most companies' competitive armoury, the focus has remained stubbornly on cost efficiencies, with scant recognition of the significant opportunity that outsourcing, and particularly offshoring, provides to access new skills, transform operational performance, or to enter entirely new product markets. The Financial Times Global Outsourcing and Offshoring Conference will explore how companies can effectively exploit the access they gain to high-value skills, innovative management techniques and elaborate business networks in emerging outsourcing destinations, to include India, China and Eastern Europe, to transform their business processes and strategies to meet the challenge of global competition.

Just because outsourcing has become a mainstream business practice doesn't necessarily mean it offers a clear path to better business performance, flexibility or even cost savings. And it certainly doesn't mean that outsourcing is a one-size-fits-all proposition. As demands and expectations shift, new outsourcing models emerge and fast-morphing players and markets create both greater choices and greater uncertainty - from utility-based computing to handing over an entire business process for outsourcing.
The result: the world of outsourcing is poised for incredible change over the next two to five years. How do you make sense of it all? Attend the one conference that clears up all the confusion with a practical methodology that helps you manage the choices, the risks and the outcomes.

This track will focus on the best practices, processes and tools for developing a disciplined and effective multisourced enterprise.

Companies moving operations offshore are usually motivated by the savings to be achieved, but hidden costs and other risks can counterbalance the savings or indeed make the whole operation an expensive disaster. One of the major risks arises from failure to correctly address the challenge of relationship management. This applies whether the suppliers are based in traditional or emerging offshore and near-shore locations.

Service Level Agreements are a critical element in all outsourcing relationships, they provide legal structures to drive the business process effectively, manage risks and, if necessary, facilitate exit strategies. The key factors in creating successful SLAs are establishing the right metrics, clarifying the goals and developing the best processes to measure these targets and achieve them. Although globally recognised and accepted, SLAs often prove difficult to figure out.
How do you determine what clauses should go into your SLA? How do you effectively monitor and measure the performance of your SLA? How can you overcome common challenges and avoid the pitfalls experienced when implementing SLAs?

Outsourcing contracts are notoriously difficult to undertake correctly. One reason for this is that they are long-term contracts and many of those who deal with outsourcing contracts fail to analyse the commercial risks correctly. With sufficient consideration, however, almost all the risks can be identified and minimised. Dai Davis, a full time consultant with city law firm, Nabarro Nathanson, who has been involved in outsourcing contracts in one form or another for over 15 years, will discuss the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

A new version of the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment)
or TUPE Regulations is due to be published in April 2006, making this
course timely and important.
TUPE legislation is based on the European Community Acquired Rights
Directive. It protects employees' contractual terms and conditions when
they are transferred to another company, as typically happens in the event
of an outsourcing deal or a merger or acquisition.
This course reviews the original version of TUPE as well as TUPE-2, and
helps provide clarification and guidance on this complex and changing area
of the law. It will also look at the likely practical implications of the revised
Regulations, and guides participants in developing a legally compliant
strategy for dealing with transfers.
The course is relevant to any HR professional whose business
involves the contacting out of services or whose organisation may be
considering a merger or acquisition; to personnel managers and line
managers responsible for employment law issues within their organisation;
in-house legal executives and lawyers.

Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel, Shanghai, China
A Shared Service Center (SSC) is a centralized operation that provides a range of services (usually transaction-intensive repetitive) to multiple entities within the same corporation. It usually starts off with finance, accounting and IT, then moves on to other things like logistics, customer service, HR and other support functions. The scale of the SSC can vary, and serve only the local offices, or work on a regional or global geographical terrain.
SSCs give organizations cost-reduction through centralization. They raise productivity through the elimination of duplicated tasks and processes. The concentration of functions in one center means you can afford to recruit specialist staff and improve skills, which leads to a greater level of professionalism among staff. Deploying shared services rationally is a challenging task for multinationals in Asia and particularly in China , given the region's diverse market conditions, regulatory regimes and widespread geography.
Disney's Contemporary Resort, Orlando, Florida, USA

Exploiting the interfaces between companies is not an aspect of the traditional business culture. Developing a collaborative approach has been shown to release potential value and innovation. Changing the rules of the game requires alternative thinking that may be currently suppressed within the confines of current contracting practice.
London, UK
When you outsource, you often need to share data, technology, procedures and other materials. However, without successfully sharing knowledge, knowhow, best practice and lessons learnt, the costs that are saved by outsourcing can be soon overcome by the costs of poor practice and repeated mistakes. In some organisations, knowledge is not shared well in open plan offices where people sit and work close to each other. How can they possibly share their know-how well with people on the other side of the world, in a different time zone and often speaking a different language?

Global outsourcing entails identifying, evaluating, negotiating and configuring supply across multiple geographies to reduce costs, maximize performance and mitigate risks. Sourcing is also a cornerstone of total cost management (TCM), a technological and process framework for the optimal alignment, management and control of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of supply relationships. The 3rd Annual Global Outsourcing Conference will focus on a mature market and the new processes-related topics such as Six Sigma and Capability Sourcing. The concerns are no longer "how do we do it," but how can we improve on what we have. We will have presentations and discussions around such topics such as "is China the new India." Also we discuss best practices from other industries, such as pharmaceuticals, that will give IT and manufacturing some next generation tools for a next generation market.
